The art of window dressing: A guide to choosing and hanging curtains

Hanging curtains is a simple and affordable way to update the look of a room but finding the right place to hang them can be tricky. Whether you are installing curtain rods for the first time or replacing old ones, the following guide will help you determine the best location for your curtains and how to hang them properly.

Where to hang your curtains

  1. Above the window: The most common place to hang curtains is above the window frame. This is a great option if you want to block out light or add privacy. Make sure the rod extends at least 6 inches on either side of the window and is mounted at least 4 inches above the window frame.
  2. Inside of the window frame: If you have a uniquely shaped window or want to create a more decorative look, you can hang your curtains to the side of the window. This is a great option if you want to create a cozy reading nook or add a touch of elegance to a room.

How to hang your curtains

  1. Measure the window: Measure the width of the window to determine the length of the rod you need. Make sure the rod is at least 2 inches wider than the window on each side at minimum.
  2. Mark the wall: Using a pencil and level, mark the wall where you want to hang the brackets. Make sure they are level and spaced evenly.
  3. Install the brackets: Hold the braket against the wall at the marked spot and use a drill to screw it into place. Repeat the process with the other braket.
  4. Attach the rod: Place the rod into the brackets and tighten the screw to secure it in place.
  5. Hang the curtains: Slip the curtains onto the rod and adjust the folds to create a clean and even look. Making sure it slightly kisses the floor.
